Art and Architecture
They say that the presence of art and culture in a city is the barometer of its soul. Hastings is an inspiring example of modern art and sculpture sitting comfortably alongside historically important architecture.
The Haukunui Sculpture by Jacob Scott, Ricks Terstappen and William Jameson combines Maoir Art with contemporary materials. The bowl has a strong Polynesian influence and contains stylises Maori figures with water deflecting over them. The piece is themed on a 'produce container', holding the 'district's fruits'.
David Trubridge’s fabulous Leaf Lights range from seven to nine metres in height and are scattered in clusters around the central plaza area. The design was based on recognising the importance of Hawke’s Bay’s horticultural industry.
The centrepiece artwork for the Hastings City Centre is Suntrap by renowned New Zealand artist Neil Dawson. Suspended above the city square, Suntrap is a sphere made up of six parasol-type forms, with the negative spaces in between having a leaf form.
A central feature of the plaza is the Performance Platform. Designed and constructed by artists in collaboration, Jacob Scott, Linda Bruce, Ricks Terstappen, William Jameson and Te Rangi Huata, the platform roof is based on te kahu, the hawk, and what he sees as he flies over Hawke’s Bay.
Following the devastating Hawke's Bay earthquake in 1931, a stunning new townscape was created embracing the revolutionary new architectural styles popular at the time. Examples of Art Deco, Stripped Classical and Spanish Mission architecture have been preserved throughout the city.
Elements by Te Awanga artist Liz Earth, consists of four ferro-cement forms with ceramic tile decoration, painting and metal. The forms represent the Earth, its energy, strata and ancient history, and the Sun and atmosphere.
The Haukanui Water feature is an active kinetic focal point in the heart of Hastings. Haukanui means ‘life giving waters’ and symbolises the abundant natural water resource of the local aquifer system.
While olive trees have been given pride of place in the stylish granite topped planters, stories of Hastings are visually represented in the ceramic tiles that suround the planter base. Judith Rosamund (Poore) crafted the tiles to depict the strong local elements of good climate, abundant fruit, farming, heritage, architecture and local historical events.
Nga Pou o Heretaunga – 18 pou, each representing an ancestor from marae around the Heretaunga district stand proudly in the centre of Civic Square in Hastings, presenting a tangible link to the regions' cultural heritage.
The Nikau Vessel by Virginia King, is a three-metre high sculpture made out of aluminium and stainless steel. Water flows over images of grapes and olives, stone fruit and ferns that appear amongst the 108,000 holes cut into its stainless interior.

'Resurgence' by Peter Baker, William Jameson and Jacob Scott, represents the young shoots of plants which convey feelings of growth, freshness and a new start. Ideas that fit with the concept behind the CBD revitalisation project which coincided with the start of the new millennium (2000).
Sculptor Ricks Terstappen’s Pillars is a collection of Hawke’s Bay industrial memorabilia. Industrial machines parts, orchard and farm equipment, and other quirky pieces combine to represent Hawke’s Bay industry and culture.
The Sheep by Gary Hebley installed in 1989 are a family favourite in the CBD. The small flock proudly recognises Hastings' strong links to its rural hinterland where pastoral farming has been the backbone of the Hastings District economy.
